Greece: Protesters block Athens airport runways

October 14th, 2008

International Herald Tribune

ATHENS, Greece: Protesting workers at Greek carrier Olympic Airlines have blocked both runways at Athens International Airport, briefly disrupting flights.

Airport officials say the demonstration lasted about 10 minutes, forcing planes to circle the airport. Police are reporting no arrests.

Olympic’s employee unions oppose government plans to sell the loss-making airline under a plan that would see most workers transferred to other public sector jobs.

The protest took place Tuesday.

Strike brings capital to a halt as workers oppose sell-off plans

Employees of the state air-carrier Olympic Airlines joined a large-scale workers’ strike yesterday to protest the government’s plans for its privatization. OA canceled more than 50 flights. Other flights were affected too, as air-traffic controllers joined the action. The city center clogged up as citizens relied on their cars due to a public transport strike.

Traffic ground to a halt in the city center and flights were canceled at Athens International Airport yesterday as tens of thousands of workers joined a strike to protest the government’s privatization plans and the rising cost of living.

The capital suffered chronic congestion as a public transport strike led thousands of city-dwellers to rely on their cars, clogging up main roads and creating traffic jams stretching several kilometers. Metro services were suspended all day, forcing thousands of commuters to board crammed buses, trams and trolley buses whose services were only interrupted in the early morning and late at night. The protest also crippled rail transport, which ran a severely reduced service of one train per destination and hit the country’s ports, where ferries remained anchored.

“Today was only the beginning, tomorrow all workers will be on the streets,” said Yiannis Panagopoulos, the head of the country’s umbrella labor union GSEE, which has called a nationwide general strike for October 21. “We demand they change their policies. They have to protect public property, stop destroying the social security system and respect our rights,” said Panagopoulos.

In an effort to diffuse public discontent on the eve of yesterday’s strike, Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis announced a crackdown on profiteering as well as a raft of measures to protect consumers, including the creation of an agency to regulate price rises.

Transport strike brings Greece to a halt

October 8th, 2008

ATHENS, Greece (CNN) — Greece’s air, rail and urban transport came to a grinding halt Wednesday as the country’s biggest labor union staged a 24-hour nationwide strike in protest of the government’s plan to sell off the state’s ailing carrier Olympic Airlines.
People queue at an Olympic Airlines desk at Athens International Airport.

At least 50 domestic and international flights were canceled by the troubled state airline, operating only one flight per destination and leaving hundreds of travelers stranded at Greece’s main international airport in Athens.

Public transport — including the Athens metro, state railway services and city buses — also came to a standstill, forcing thousands of commuters to drive to work and causing major traffic problems in central Athens.

Employees at the partially privatized telephone company OTE and state-run public power company PPC joined the protest action as state hospitals, also, operated with emergency skeleton staff.

The strike was staged by the General Confederation of Greek Workers, known by its Greek acronym GSEE, which represents about 2 million workers.

The 24-hour job walkout followed the government’s announcement last month to shut down and sell off Olympic Airlines despite pledges to compensate workers or find them new public sector jobs.

“We want an end to these privatizations,” GSEE vice president Alekos Kalivis told reporters ahead of a massive rally in downtown Athens. “These moves are neither smart, nor are they reforms.”

Greece’s reform-minded government has vowed to privatize Olympic Airlines by April.

Wednesday’s nationwide strike is the latest show of swelling labor unrest over unpopular reforms and tax measures unveiled by the center-right government since its re-election last year.
