May Day strikes to disrupt Greek public transport
ATHENS, Greece (AP) – Greece’s Olympic Airlines says it is canceling more than 100 flights Friday as part of union protests coinciding with the May 1 labor day holiday.
Public transport services including buses, intercity trains and the capital’s metro system, will also be disrupted, as will ferry routes between Greek islands.
Olympic Airlines said Thursday it would cancel 52 flights, mostly to domestic destinations but also including routes to Dusseldorf, Rome, Milan, Paris, Brussels, Bucharest and Larnaca.
Labor unions and left-wing parties are planning several demonstrations in Athens and other major cities. The protests will focus on the effect of the international financial crisis, which has slowed growth and fueled unemployment in Greece.
